Entering Through The Moment

  • Mechanics' Hall 519 Congress Street Portland, ME, 04101 United States (map)

A 3-Week In-Person Fiction Workshop

Tuesdays, March 25 - April 8, 6 - 9 PM

In life, being “in the moment” can be the difference between an alert receptivity (that brings with it truth, beauty, mystery, awe, humility, etc.) and a blind race toward the end. In fiction, being “in the moment” brings the same dividends. And the beauty of it is: You don’t have to be a master of mindfulness in life to engage with it on the page.

When we allow ourselves to explore our characters’ lives moment by rich, seething moment, without goal or agenda, without trying too early to strap it all together—which is to say, when we enter the writing process on faith—we engage in an act of authentic discovery that can be as exciting for the writer as it is for the reader. This mode of writing asks that we set our outlines and pre-conceived ideas aside. It asks us to believe in what we don’t yet know, to say “just a sec” to our own ego’s urge to flatten and tell. It asks us to attend, and to see.

Participants should come ready to generate a new piece of work and can expect some light homework between sessions.

$180 Members/$235 Nonmembers
