A 5-Week Poetry & Translation Workshop
Wednesdays: March 5 - April 2, 6-9 PM
Octavio Paz said: “Translation is an art of analogy, the art of finding correspondences. An art of shadows and echoes…” Charles Baudelaire said that poetry is essentially analogy. The idea of universal correspondence comes from the idea that language is a micro cosmos, a double of the universe. Between the language of the universe and the universe of language, there is a bridge, a link: poetry. The poet, says Baudelaire, is the translator.”
In this five-week course, we will study multiple translations of single poems, examine the choices and strategies of translation. In addition, each participant will also provide weekly contributions of their own translation of given poems. These translations will serve as focal points for the larger subject of translation, that of the poet as translator. For this class, experience translating and knowledge of a second language is welcome but not at all necessary.

Malena Mörling was born in southern Sweden in 1965. She is the author of two books of poetry: Ocean Avenue and Astoria. She has published translations of work by Nobel Laureate Tomas Tranströmer and together with Jonas Ellerström, a collection of the Finland-Swedish poet Edith Södergran, On Foot I Wandered Through the Solar Systems, the collection 1933 by Philip Levine into Swedish, and they have edited and translated the anthology, The Star by My Head, Poets from Sweden published by Milkweed Editions. Mörling has received a Lannan Literary Fellowship, a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship, and a Dianna L. Bennett Fellowship from the Beverly Rogers, Carol C. Harter Black Mountain Institute. She lives in Santa Fe, NM and is a Professor of Creative Writing at The University of North Carolina, Wilmington.
